How to Keep Your Dog's Paws Cool in the Heat

Summer is a wonderful time to enjoy the outdoors with your dog — but hot pavement, sand, and surfaces can be a serious hazard to your pup's sensitive paw pads. Here's how to keep those paws safe and comfortable all season long.

1. Check the Pavement Before You Walk

If the ground is too hot for the back of your hand to rest on for 5 seconds, it's too hot for your dog's paws. Asphalt can reach temperatures well above the air temperature on sunny days, causing painful burns in a matter of seconds.

2. Walk During Cooler Parts of the Day

Early morning and evening walks are your best bet during the summer. Avoid midday heat when surfaces are at their hottest. Your dog will be much more comfortable — and so will you!

3. Stick to Grass and Shaded Paths

Whenever possible, route your walks through grassy areas, parks, and shaded trails. Grass stays significantly cooler than concrete or asphalt and is gentler on paw pads.

4. Use Paw Balm or Wax

Paw balms and protective waxes create a barrier between your dog's pads and hot surfaces. Apply before walks and also after to keep pads moisturized and prevent cracking.

5. Try Dog Booties

Dog boots aren't just a fashion statement — they provide real protection from hot ground. Many dogs take a little time to get used to them, so start with short indoor sessions and gradually build up to outdoor walks.

6. Rinse Paws After Walks

Cool water on the paws after a hot walk helps bring down temperature and washes away any hot pavement residue, salt, or chemicals. It's a great habit to build into your post-walk routine.

7. Know the Signs of Burned Paws

Watch for limping, licking or chewing at paws, red or blistered pads, or reluctance to walk. If you notice any of these signs, move your dog to a cool surface, rinse with cool (not cold) water, and contact your vet.

Your dog counts on you to keep them safe — and a little planning goes a long way in the summer heat. Stock up on paw protection essentials and make every walk a comfortable one!
